Do you think you are ageing well?
When we think about ageing, many people only think about becoming wrinkly. But actually ageing is so much more than that with both pro's and con's and attitude towards ageing will have a big impact on your health and happiness.
Pro's of Ageing:
Believe it or not there are benefits to ageing. Firstly, a huge positive is the wisdom that we gain by having lived a life. And the more full you make your life, the more you will have learned and the wiser you will become. This is truly a blessing of ageing.
Secondly, I read an article this week which was written by a 31 year old man who only had weeks to live. He pointed out that we should all be proud of every wrinkle on our skin, because it means we've made it to an age where we actually have them. We should be celebrating ageing, living that long and the life that we've had. This was a 'WOW' moment for me and really made me think I need to change my way of thinking. I would like to try to embrace my changes through life.
Con's of Ageing:
Unfortunately there are quite a few: Wrinkles (depending on your life outlook - see above), muscle depletion, bone density reduction, organs ageing and the list goes on... Unfortunately all these things mean that moving through life gets harder and disease becomes more likely.
These things are not inevitable. If you want to age well, you have that option open to you. If you:
- Live the right life
- Eat the right foods
- Do the right exercise
- Get enough downtime
- Have a positive attitude
- Be grateful for all that you have
- Get plenty of sleep
- And include lots of fun...
you can drastically reduce your chances of ageing badly - getting cancer, heart disease and a whole host of inflammatory diseases including Alzheimers. Of course you don't have to do all these things 100% of the time, but the more you do them, the more likely you are to age well. Every minute lifestyle decision you make now, sets the course of your life's path.
