Your Essential Guide to Hydration and Electrolytes: What You Need to Know

With the hotter weather here and holidays in full swing I thought it important to talk about hydration and the use of electrolytes: what they are, whether supplements are worth it, and who really needs them. Electrolytes play a vital role in how our bodies function, and understanding their role can help you feel more energised, perform better, and stay properly hydrated—without wasting money on unnecessary extras.


💧 Why Staying Hydrated Matters

Proper hydration isn’t just about quenching your thirst — it’s essential for your body to function at its best. Staying hydrated helps to:

  • Regulate body temperature

  • Maintain energy levels and focus

  • Support muscle function and prevent cramps (See video ->)

  • Keep joints lubricated

  • Aid digestion and nutrient absorption

  • Flush out toxins and support kidney function

  • Promote healthy skin and overall wellbeing

And when you sweat — whether from exercise, heat, or stress — you lose not just water, but vital electrolytes too. Replacing both is key to feeling and performing your best.

Why Do We Need Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge and are essential for many bodily functions. They help:

  • Maintain fluid balance
  • Support nerve signalling
  • Regulate muscle contractions (including your heart)
  • Give support and structure to your muscles (See video ->)
  • Prevent dehydration and fatigue

The main electrolytes are:

  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Chloride
  • Phosphorus

Without enough of these minerals—especially during heavy sweating, intense workouts, hot weather, or illness—you can feel fatigued, dizzy, crampy, or sluggish. Also, having the wrong balance can lead to bloating and water retention, particularly if you're overloading sodium without balancing it with potassium and magnesium. Many people mistakenly think they’re drinking enough, when in fact they’re flushing out their electrolytes and holding onto excess water.


How Much Do We Need?

In the UK, the recommended daily intakes for electrolytes (and electrolyte-related minerals) are based on guidance from the NHS, EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), and UK Government Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs). Recommendations do vary, but here's a summary of the 7 key electrolyte minerals and their typical recommended intakes for adults:

Who Benefits from Taking Electrolyte Supplements?

You might benefit from supplements if you:

  • Exercise intensely, especially in hot climates
  • Sweat a lot or do endurance events.
  • Fast regularly (especially longer than 16 hours)
  • Are prone to headaches, fatigue, or dizziness
  • Have low blood pressure or poor fluid retention
  • Experience bloating or puffiness due to poor electrolyte balance

My personal experience: I find taking electrolytes massively helps me get round the golf course and stops me bloating as I go round. The same for long hikes when your hands go all puffy. Try taking electrolytes to help alleviate this.

Note: For most people doing light-to-moderate exercise, eating a balanced diet and drinking water is usually enough.

What About the “Other” Ingredients?

Most products include more than just electrolytes. Let’s break down what some of those extras are and whether they’re really needed:

  • Citric Acid: A food additive used for tartness and preservation. Generally safe, but unnecessary unless for taste. I usually stay clear of all food additives, but citric acid has been found to improve the absorption of minerals so potentially a good thing in this instance.
  • Stevia: In an ideal world you wouldn't use any sweeteners, but Stevia is one of the only ones here that I would say are fine to have if you have to have something.
  • Sucralose/Acesulfame-K/Aspartame: Non-nutritive sweeteners are better off avoided. These are calorie-free but controversial. Some people report bloating or digestive issues and some studies show negative effects on insulin sensitivity, also consumption correlates with with obesity. There is some evidence they are carcinogenic to humans and cause hormonal disruption when consumed in large amounts. Even if you are not having large amounts, why would you want to be eating small amounts that could add up over time?
  • Maltodextrin: A carb-based highly processed thickener/filler. Can spike blood sugars and has been associated with an increased risk of disease. Only use if and when you are doing endurance events or trying to put on weight. But even then, there are better sources of energy than this in real food.
  • Firming Agent (Sorbitols): Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol sweetener which are the type of sweeteners I prefer if you have to use one. Although it can have a laxative effect.
  • Leucine: An essential amino acid which plays a crucial role in muscle protein synthesis and can help prevent muscle breakdown. Leucine also contributes to energy metabolism, including glucose uptake and fatty acid oxidation. So this is actually a really positive additional ingredient when you are doing sport.
  • Natural Flavours / Artificial Flavourings: Used to improve taste. These are highly processed and often proprietary, even when they say natural. Ideally aim to avoid as you have no idea what is actually in them.
  • Inulin: A prebiotic fibre. May aid gut health as it provides good food for you good gut bacteria, but could cause bloating in sensitive individuals who are not used to it.
  • L-Carnitine & Green Tea: Found in some higher-end formulas like Rejuvenated H3O. These are marketed as energy/metabolism boosters but not necessary for hydration.
  • Glucose: Usually I would say avoid glucose, but if you are being active/doing some endurance exercise this is the one time where I'd say go for it as it will instantly raise your bloody sugars and give you energy. But if you are just dehydrated because it is hot, you might want to avoid glucose as an ingredient, as it is inflammatory and may lead to weight gain if you are sedentary.
  • Trans Resveratrol: a potent antioxidant which is considered to be more powerful than Vitamin C, E and beta carotene. It helps to support health at a cellular level.
  • Anti-caking Agent (Polythene Glycol): is a synthetic compound used in food and supplements to prevent clumping and help powders flow more easily. Again not an ideal ingredient. 
  • Hyaluronic Acid: is a naturally occurring substance in your body — especially in skin, joints, and connective tissues — where it helps retain moisture, cushion joints, and support healing.
  • Acacia Gum: A thickener, stabiliser and emulsifier. Also called E414. Although approved by the European Food Safety Authority I personally prefer to stay away from any food additive as evidence is slowly coming through on the negative effects on peoples gut health.

As a wellness coach, I tend to recommend keeping things simple. If you're using electrolytes regularly, ideally choose a blend with the fewest unnecessary additives, which will mean you are less likely you are to deal with bloating, gut bacterial issues, sugar cravings, or water retention. And actually, you can see from the table that coconut water is a great option.


Final Thoughts

Electrolytes are essential to optimal hydration and wellbeing. But not all supplements are created equal. Focus on quality over quantity. Look for products with effective doses of sodium, potassium, and magnesium, and be cautious of excessive fillers and sweeteners.
